Sophomore Clara Allen has earned the opportunity to be a part of the North Carolina (NC) House Page Program this summer. The Program will be taking place June 16 - 19, located at the House of Representatives in Raleigh, NC.
The NC House Page Program allows high school students to get first-hand experience in the legislative operations and learn about how laws are created in NC.
Allen applied for the Page Program at the beginning of January. Not only did she have to fill out a written application, but she also had to ask NC Representative Dr. Timothy Reeder to sponsor her.

After Allen completed the application process, she later received a letter from the Speaker of the House informing her of her acceptance. Applying for the Page Program was important to Allen, as she is passionate about government and politics.
“I am very interested in everything that goes into the legislative process,” Allen said. “I like how it impacts everyone; there's always something relevant and new to talk about and discuss; there are so many different aspects that go into government and politics.”
Allen has always been interested in politics, but part of her dedication was built with the help of teacher Liiza Knight, who taught Allen Advanced Placement (AP) United States Government and Politics.
“[Knight] helped further my passion for government and politics by making [her] class exciting and interactive,” Allen said.
Knight also encouraged Allen with the Page Program and helped her navigate through her application.
“Mrs. Knight was really helpful throughout the entire application process,” Allen said. “She reviewed my application and gave me areas where I can improve.”
Allen applied not only because she has a passion for government and politics, but also because of the benefits she believes that this program will give her.
“There are things I can gain, [like] public speaking skills, how to work as a teammate [and] just really learn more about the process of legislation,” Allen said.
Allen believes she will gain life skills from participating in the Page Program that can help impact her future.
“It gives me an opportunity to network and make connections with people who I can potentially call back on later in life when an opportunity comes up,” Allen said.
Even though it is only four days, Allen hopes this program will further introduce her to the world of government and politics and she believes that this program could give her the insight needed to strive in this environment in the future.
“I plan on going to law school, and then once I have more experience with that, then I can hopefully pursue a career in politics,” Allen said.
